Villa Monastero vs Villa del Balbianello: Which Lake Como Wedding Venue Is Right for You?

Lake Como Wedding Venue Guide

Villa Monastero vs Villa del Balbianello:
Which Lake Como Wedding Venue Is Right for You?

Updated May 2026 · By the WowItaly Weddings team

Two iconic villas. Two unforgettable atmospheres.

If you are planning a wedding on Lake Como, sooner or later your search will almost certainly lead you to two legendary venues: Villa Monastero and Villa del Balbianello.

Both are among the most iconic wedding locations in Italy — celebrated for their breathtaking lake views, historic elegance, and gardens that seem suspended between nature and art.

Yet despite how often they are compared, the feeling of getting married at each villa is entirely different.

Villa Monastero feels intimate, refined, and quietly romantic.
Villa del Balbianello feels cinematic, iconic, and undeniably dramatic.

The choice is not really about which venue is “better.”
It is about discovering which atmosphere feels more like you.

After planning weddings at both venues for many years, we created this guide to help couples understand the real difference between the two most iconic wedding villas on Lake Como.

Choose Villa Monastero or Villa del Balbianello if…

Quick Answer

Villa Monastero may be your perfect match if…

  • You are drawn to intimacy over grandeur.
  • You imagine a ceremony bathed in soft golden sunset light.
  • You value privacy, elegance, and a slower atmosphere.
  • You are planning an elopement or a refined celebration with only your closest people.
  • You want the freedom to create a wedding experience that feels entirely your own.

Villa Monastero feels understated, romantic, and effortlessly sophisticated — the kind of beauty that never needs to ask for attention.

Choose Villa del Balbianello if…

  • You dream of a wedding that feels cinematic from beginning to end.
  • You want the possibility of a legal civil ceremony in Italy.
  • You are planning a larger celebration surrounded by family and friends.
  • The iconic loggia overlooking the lake has already become part of your vision.
  • And arriving by boat feels less like transportation — and more like the beginning of the experience itself.

Villa del Balbianello is dramatic, iconic, and unmistakably Lake Como — a place where every moment feels worthy of a film scene.

What the Ceremony Feels Like at Each Venue

Villa Monastero — Varenna

A ceremony at Villa Monastero feels intimate from the very first moment. The vows take place on an open panoramic terrace surrounded by botanical gardens, with Lake Como stretching quietly below you.

The atmosphere here is soft, elegant, and unhurried — the kind of setting where even a small wedding feels deeply emotional and complete.

One of the things couples notice immediately at Villa Monastero is the calm.

The ceremony feels naturally private because it takes place on a separate panoramic terrace directly above the water. You are gently removed from the rest of the villa and the surrounding visitors, allowing the moment to feel calm, intimate, and entirely focused on the two of you.

There is no sense of performing in front of strangers or sharing the experience with the outside world.

Instead, your attention stays exactly where it should — on your vows, your emotions, and the extraordinary beauty of Lake Como surrounding you from every side.

Villa Monastero hosts symbolic ceremonies only, which for most international couples is actually the ideal balance — allowing complete emotional freedom without the complexity of Italian legal paperwork.

For couples who would also like a legally recognised marriage in Italy, the civil registration can be completed separately at the Varenna town hall. The process itself is relatively straightforward, though official documentation must be prepared several months in advance.

Villa del Balbianello — Lenno

A wedding ceremony at Villa del Balbianello feels cinematic in the truest sense of the word.

Everything begins with the arrival by boat.

There is no road leading to the villa — only water.

Guests approach the estate across the lake before stepping onto a private pier framed by historic gates, stone pathways, and terraced gardens climbing toward the famous Loggia Durini.

And then suddenly, the view opens.

The lake, the mountains, Bellagio in the distance, Isola Comacina — all visible at once beneath the iconic arches covered in climbing greenery.

This is the exact image many couples imagine when dreaming about a wedding on Lake Como.

Villa del Balbianello is also one of the very few venues on the lake licensed for legally binding civil ceremonies.

The official ceremony takes place beneath the loggia, while the legal paperwork is completed separately through the Comune di Tremezzina several days before the wedding. Town hall fees and interpreter costs are additional to the venue rental.

One important detail worth understanding in advance: during public opening hours (Tuesday and Thursday–Sunday, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM), parts of the villa remain accessible to visitors.

Smaller weddings of up to 30 guests can still take place beautifully during this time, with reserved ceremony access coordinated directly with the venue.

For couples seeking complete exclusivity and privacy, evening buyout options are available after the villa closes to the public.

The Photography Experience

For most couples, a wedding begins long before the actual day itself. It starts with a saved photograph on Pinterest. A screenshot titled “this is exactly the kind of wedding I dream about.” A feeling you return to over and over again while imagining what your own day could look like.

Which is why wedding photography is never just about beautiful images for social media.

Years later, these photographs become something much more important — the way you looked at each other during the vows, and the feeling of being completely inside one unforgettable moment together.

Villa Monastero

Villa Monastero offers an extraordinary variety of scenery within a single location.

The gardens unfold along the waterfront for more than 500 metres, creating constantly changing perspectives: lemon trees, stone terraces, hidden pathways, historic staircases, cypress trees, lakefront balustrades, and quiet corners opening unexpectedly onto the water.

The photography here feels soft, elegant, and deeply editorial.

Because the villa faces west, the light becomes especially beautiful in the late afternoon and at sunset.

From late spring through early autumn, golden hour at Villa Monastero can feel almost unreal — warm Alpine light reflecting across the lake while the gardens slowly soften into evening.

For a full overview of the best photography locations at Villa Monastero, explore our dedicated venue guide.

Villa del Balbianello

Villa del Balbianello creates some of the most iconic wedding photographs on all of Lake Como.

The famous Loggia Durini — with its three arches framing the lake and mountains — is instantly recognisable and remains one of the most photographed ceremony locations in Italy. But the experience goes far beyond a single image.

The terraced gardens, elevated viewpoints and private pier all create opportunities for photographs that feel cinematic from beginning to end. Even before the vows begin, the day already feels like part of a film.

One practical detail to consider: during public hours, photographers do need to work around tourist presence throughout parts of the villa. Couples wanting completely uninterrupted editorial-style photography often prefer exclusive evening access.

Getting There And What That Means for Your Guests

Villa Monastero — Varenna

Varenna is one of the easiest and most charming locations to access on Lake Como.

Guests can arrive independently by train from Milan, by ferry, or by car without requiring complicated coordination. The village itself feels relaxed, walkable, and wonderfully atmospheric — ideal for couples planning several days around the wedding rather than only a single event.

There are beautiful hotels directly on the waterfront, excellent restaurants, and easy ferry connections to Bellagio and the rest of the lake.

Many couples also include a private boat tour after the ceremony, allowing the celebration to continue slowly on the water during sunset with prosecco, music, and the mountains surrounding the lake from every direction.

For couples booking our Villa Monastero all-inclusive package, the private boat experience is already included.

Villa del Balbianello — Lenno

Villa del Balbianello is accessible only by boat.

And while this is undeniably part of its magic, it also means every aspect of the wedding requires more careful logistical coordination — guests, musicians, florals, photography equipment, catering, timing, transfers.

For intimate weddings, this works beautifully and becomes part of the overall experience.

For larger groups, however, transportation planning becomes a significant part of the wedding structure itself, particularly if some guests have mobility limitations.

The surrounding area — Lenno, Tremezzo, and Cadenabbia — offers beautiful accommodation, though generally with fewer hotel and restaurant options compared to Varenna or Bellagio.

Supplier Flexibility — One of the Biggest Hidden Differences

This is one of the most important practical differences between the two venues — and one couples often discover only later in the planning process.

Villa Monastero

Villa Monastero offers complete flexibility in choosing your suppliers.

Photographers, florists, musicians, videographers — everything can be selected entirely based on your own vision, aesthetic preferences, and budget priorities.

This creative freedom allows the wedding to feel more personal and often gives planners significantly more flexibility when balancing atmosphere and costs.

Villa del Balbianello

Villa del Balbianello operates under a different structure.

As the property is managed by FAI (the Italian National Trust), several categories of suppliers must be selected from an approved vendor list, including catering, lighting, music, and some production services.

The supplier quality remains very high, but there is naturally less flexibility in both pricing and creative direction.

For some couples, this is perfectly comfortable.

For others, Villa Monastero feels more aligned simply because it allows greater freedom to personalise the overall experience.

Who Usually Chooses Which Villa?

Villa Monastero

Villa Monastero is often perfect for couples who:

— are planning an intimate wedding or elopement

— want a symbolic ceremony without legal complexity

— dream about sunset light and a softer romantic atmosphere

— value privacy and emotional intimacy

— want full freedom in choosing vendors

— prefer a wedding that feels elegant and personal rather than highly theatrical

Villa del Balbianello

Villa del Balbianello is often the right fit for couples who:

— want a legally binding civil ceremony in Italy

— have always imagined the iconic loggia photographs

— are planning a slightly larger guest count

— love the cinematic Lake Como aesthetic

— see the dramatic boat arrival as an essential part of the experience itself

If Budget Allows — Villa Balbiano

There is also a third villa worth mentioning briefly: Villa Balbiano.

Known internationally from House of Gucci and The Devil Wears Prada 2, Villa Balbiano belongs to an entirely different category of Lake Como weddings.

Unlike Monastero or Balbianello, the property is fully private and available exclusively to the couple and their guests. No tourists. No public access.

For some couples, it becomes the dream option wich also comes with a substantially higher budget and a very different planning structure overall.

But for most couples deciding between the two most iconic wedding villas on Lake Como, the real decision usually remains between Villa Monastero and Villa del Balbianello.

Frequently Asked Questions About VILLAS

Can we have a legally binding civil ceremony at both villas?

No. Villa del Balbianello is licensed for official civil ceremonies in Italy, while Villa Monastero hosts symbolic ceremonies only. Couples marrying legally at Monastero usually complete the civil registration separately through the Varenna municipality.

Which venue is more expensive overall?

The base rental fees are relatively comparable, but Villa del Balbianello weddings often become significantly more expensive overall due to mandatory approved suppliers and stricter logistical requirements.

Villa Monastero usually offers more flexibility for balancing budget and aesthetic priorities without compromising the overall experience.

Which villa works better for very small weddings or elopements?

Villa Monastero.

The calmer atmosphere, intimate scale, and slower rhythm of the day work especially beautifully for couples planning a wedding just for the two of you or with only a handful of guests.

Can tourists still be present during a ceremony at Balbianello?

Yes, during public opening hours visitors remain within parts of the estate, although ceremony spaces themselves are reserved temporarily for the wedding.

For complete exclusivity and privacy, evening private use is recommended.

Which villa is better for photography?

Honestly — both are extraordinary, simply in different ways.Yes — we work at both Villa Monastero and Villa del Balbianello regularly.

Our Villa Monastero all-inclusive wedding package starts from €12,500 for up to 25 guests.

For Villa del Balbianello, planning is customised individually depending on the guest count, timing, and overall format of the wedding.

Do you plan weddings at both venues?

Villa del Balbianello offers one of the most iconic views on Lake Como —
the legendary loggia suspended above the water,
framed by cypress trees, historic arches, and cinematic lake panoramas.

Villa Monastero, meanwhile, feels softer and more intimate —
offering extraordinary variety for photography,
uninterrupted shooting time,
and some of the most beautiful sunset light anywhere on the lake.

Lake Como Wedding Planning

Why couples plan their
Lake Como wedding with us

Italy-based wedding planners since 2016

We live here

Italian-based team since 2016.

Our wedding planner Catherine is on Lake Como every week, walking through villas and coordinating weddings in person.

We know Villa Monastero, its staff, its rules, and its quietest corners.

When you book a call, you’re talking to the people who’ll actually plan your wedding — not a sales team.

No hidden fees

Every package clearly shows what’s included and what’s not, with optional add-ons priced separately.

You’ll see the full cost before you commit — with transparent planning, clear communication, and no unexpected fees later in the process.

A small number of weddings each season

We accept a limited group of couples each year — and turn down more weddings than we take on.

The couples we say yes to receive our full attention from the very first planning call to the final toast on the wedding day itself.

We keep our calendar intentionally small so every celebration feels personal, calm, and fully cared for.

Three planners on every project

Every wedding is supported by three planners working together behind the scenes.

If one of us is unavailable on the wedding day, two others are already fully involved and ready to step in without disruption.

You’ll never be left relying on a single point of contact who could suddenly disappear halfway through the planning process.

Testimonials

“We honestly couldn’t have done this without you.”

You turned what felt overwhelming into something we were simply able to enjoy from beginning to end.

Our team came prepared with a clear plan from day one, kept everything on schedule, and made sure every detail we cared about was taken care of — and then some.

When the weather changed unexpectedly, they handled everything so smoothly that we barely even noticed. No stress, no scrambling — just the day we’d always imagined together.

They also went beyond the wedding itself, helping us navigate Italy like locals and pointing us toward places and experiences we never would have discovered on our own.

Margo & Yaros

“Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.”

From the very first conversation to the moment the ceremony ended, you made us feel completely at ease.

The ceremony itself was everything we hoped it would be — personal, warm, and exactly right. And Marina, having you there from day one meant more than you know.

We came to Italy to get married and somehow left feeling like we’d made lifelong friends. We look back on that day with nothing but warmth.

Giulia & Jan-Marie
29.08.25
“It felt like something out of a film.”

Our guests came from seven different countries — and by the end of the evening, every single one of them was saying the same thing: they had never been to a wedding quite like this.

We knew from the start that none of it would have been possible without the enormous amount of work happening behind the scenes. All we had to do was show up and enjoy it — and we did, completely.

Every person on the team that day was warm, professional, and clearly doing everything with genuine care and attention.

There’s a particular feeling that comes from knowing everything is in good hands. You gave us that — and because of it, we’ll remember this day as light, beautiful, and happy for the rest of our lives.

Questions & Answers

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a symbolic and a legal ceremony?

Most American couples planning a wedding in Italy do a “two-step” approach: a 15-minute legal civil ceremony at home (city hall, with a registrar), and a symbolic ceremony in Italy as the emotional “real” wedding. The symbolic ceremony has the same vows, family, photos, and feeling — without the 2–3 months of Italian paperwork required for legal marriage abroad. Villa Monastero is set up for symbolic ceremonies, which is what most of our couples do.

How far in advance should we book?

Villa Monastero accepts a limited number of weddings per season. April–June and September–October book 12–18 months ahead. July–August book even earlier. If your date is within 6 months, book a call today — we’ll know within 24 hours if your date is still possible.

What's actually included in the €12,500?

Wedding planner, day-of coordinator, symbolic ceremony at Villa Monastero, venue rental, 2-hour photoshoot, professional photographer (5 hours), bridal hair & makeup, bouquet & boutonniere, 1-hour Venetian boat tour, aperitivo for the newlyweds, full styling concept, concierge support for hotels and restaurants, and a personal manager from start to finish. Up to 25 guests. No hidden fees.

What's NOT included?

Guest accommodation, wedding dinner, live music, videography, vintage car, and full floral design. These are listed as optional add-ons with transparent prices.

Can you handle the legal paperwork if we want a legal ceremony in Italy?

Yes — but for most American and UK couples, we recommend the two-step approach (legal at home, symbolic at Villa Monastero). It’s simpler, faster, and the ceremony day feels exactly the same. If you want full legal in Italy, we handle the paperwork; this adds approximately 8–12 weeks to the planning timeline.

Why work with you instead of a US-based destination wedding planner?

Because we live in Italy. We know Villa Monastero’s staff personally, we speak Italian and English fluently, we understand local timing and bureaucracy, and we’re 30 minutes from the venue if anything needs to be handled in person. A US-based planner manages your wedding through Zoom and email; we manage it on the ground.

What if we change our mind about the date or scope?

We work with clear contracts, transparent payment schedules, and flexible re-scoping during the planning process. If your guest count, format, or date changes, we adjust the package and pricing in writing.

This package is designed for an intimate wedding experience for the couple and up to 25 guests.

Lake Como Wedding Venue Guide

Wedding at Villa Monastero, Lake Como

A complete guide for couples dreaming of an intimate wedding on Lake Como —
from ceremony options and pricing to the best season, photography locations,
accommodation, and planning advice from a local Lake Como-based wedding team.

By the WOWITALY team — Lake Como-based wedding planners since 2016

What Is Villa Monastero?

One of the most iconic and atmospheric wedding venues on Lake Como.

Hidden in the charming town of Varenna, on the lake’s quieter eastern shore, Villa Monastero feels suspended somewhere between history, nature, and cinema.

Originally founded as a Cistercian monastery in the 12th century, the villa was later transformed into an elegant private residence and gradually shaped into the extraordinary estate seen today.

Since 1939, Villa Monastero has belonged to the Italian state and now functions as a museum, botanical garden, and one of the most exclusive wedding venues on Lake Como.

But what truly makes Villa Monastero unforgettable is the atmosphere.

Unlike many famous villas on the lake, this is not a hotel and not a private residence. Weddings here are limited, which means every celebration feels intimate, calm, and deeply personal.

The gardens stretch directly along the water — opening into hidden terraces, stone pathways, ancient trees, and quiet corners where the lake seems to disappear into the mountains.

And then there is the light.

The villa faces west, allowing the gardens to glow softly throughout the day. By sunset — when the sun disappears behind the Alpine peaks across the water — the entire estate becomes almost cinematic in a way that is difficult to explain until you experience it in person.

Monastero Villa – a luxury villa video tour featuring its elegant interiors, beautiful grounds, and key highlights that make this property truly exceptional.

Can You Get Married at Villa Monastero?

Yes — and for couples dreaming of an intimate wedding on Lake Como, Villa Monastero is one of the most romantic places in Italy to celebrate a wedding day.

The villa hosts symbolic ceremonies for international couples, allowing you to exchange vows, rings, and promises in an extraordinary lakeside setting without the complexity of Italian legal paperwork.

For most couples traveling from the US, UK, Australia, and beyond, this is the preferred option — celebrating the emotional wedding ceremony in Italy while completing the legal registration at home.

Civil ceremonies work differently.

Villa Monastero itself does not host legally binding civil weddings. Couples wishing to arrange an official Italian marriage would need to complete a separate administrative process through the municipality of Varenna, including translated documents, local paperwork, and advance preparation.

The ceremony itself takes place on one of the villa’s panoramic terraces overlooking Lake Como — surrounded by botanical gardens, historic architecture, and uninterrupted lake views.

The venue accommodates up to 25 guests, making Villa Monastero especially suited for intimate weddings, elegant elopements, and celebrations focused on atmosphere, beauty, and experience rather than scale.

What Does a Wedding at Villa Monastero Feel Like?

No two weddings at Villa Monastero ever feel exactly the same — and that is part of what makes the experience so special.

Most couples begin the day slowly, away from any rush or noise, staying in a boutique hotel or private villa near Varenna.

Morning preparations unfold overlooking the lake: coffee on the terrace, bridal hair and makeup, soft music in the background, and the quiet anticipation that builds long before the ceremony even begins.

The first look often takes place on a private terrace, in a garden lined with olive trees, or somewhere within the narrow stone streets of Varenna — hidden corners that make the town feel untouched by time.

And then the ceremony begins.

Ceremonies at Villa Monastero are usually held in the late afternoon, when the light becomes softer and the lake reflects the mountains surrounding it.

Chairs arranged on the terrace. Elegant floral compositions. The sound of water below. Vows exchanged with Lake Como stretching endlessly behind you.

After the ceremony, a classic Venetian boat waits quietly at the villa’s private dock.

And suddenly, the entire day slows down even more.

For the next hour, Lake Como belongs only to you — passing Bellagio, hidden villas, mountain villages, and quiet shores with a glass of prosecco in hand while Villa Monastero slowly disappears into the distance behind you.

The evening often ends with dinner overlooking the water: sometimes just the two of you, sometimes surrounded by a small circle of family and closest friends.

Candlelight. Italian wine. Long conversations. The lake turning from gold to deep blue long after sunset.

The kind of evening people remember not only as a wedding day — but as one of the most beautiful moments of their lives.

The Gardens and Ceremony Spaces

The botanical gardens are truly the heart of Villa Monastero.

Stretching along the waterfront, the estate unfolds through a series of terraces, hidden walkways, stone balustrades, exotic plants, and quiet corners overlooking the lake.

Every part of the garden feels cinematic, yet completely natural — elegant without ever feeling staged.

The ceremony terrace

The main ceremony terrace sits directly above the water, with uninterrupted views across Lake Como and the surrounding Alpine mountains.

Because the setting itself is already so breathtaking, the space requires very little decoration. Even the simplest ceremony here feels extraordinary.

Lake, mountains, historic gardens, and silence — everything else becomes secondary.

Throughout the gardens, there are endless locations for portraits: shaded pathways lined with ancient trees, lemon and citrus alleys, marble staircases, and secluded terraces that open unexpectedly onto the water.

A quieter side of the experience

Photography inside the historic halls of the villa is not permitted.

However, private guided tours of the interiors can be arranged for guests during the portrait session — a beautiful way to make even the quieter moments of the day feel part of the overall experience.

Photography at Villa Monastero

For couples who truly value photography, Villa Monastero is one of the most inspiring wedding locations on Lake Como.

The light here changes beautifully throughout the day, creating an atmosphere that feels soft, elegant, and deeply cinematic.

Some of our favorite locations within the estate include:

  • the lemon tree alley overlooking the water,
  • the panoramic stone terrace above the lake,
  • the intimate neoclassical balcony,
  • the grand staircase framed by marble statues,
  • and the private dock where the boat departs after the ceremony.

That final moment — leaving the villa by boat while guests wave from the gardens above — is often one of the most emotional parts of the entire day.

And one of the most unforgettable.

The Best Time to Get Married at Villa Monastero

Lake Como changes beautifully throughout the seasons, and the time of year you choose will shape the entire atmosphere of your wedding day.

May & June

May and June are the most requested months for weddings at Villa Monastero.

The gardens are in full bloom, temperatures are comfortable, and the light remains soft well into the evening. The entire villa feels fresh, vibrant, and filled with movement from the water and gardens around it.

This is also the rainiest season on the lake — although showers are usually brief and often followed quickly by sunshine.

July & August

Summer on Lake Como feels vibrant, warm, and full of energy.

July and August bring long days, glowing sunsets, and deep blue evenings on the water. Temperatures can become quite high during the afternoon, which is why we usually recommend scheduling ceremonies closer to sunset, when the heat softens and the entire lake begins to glow in golden light.

This is the season of warm evenings, boat rides at dusk, and candlelit dinners by the water.

September & Early October

In our opinion, this is the hidden gem of the wedding season on Lake Como.

The crowds become smaller, the atmosphere quieter, and the light richer and more cinematic. Early autumn colors begin to appear in the mountains surrounding the lake, creating an incredibly elegant backdrop for intimate celebrations.

For couples looking for calm, beauty, and a more relaxed atmosphere — this is often the most beautiful time to marry at Villa Monastero.

Wedding Season at Villa Monastero

Villa Monastero is open year-round, though the ideal wedding season runs from May through October, when the gardens are at their most beautiful and ceremonies can fully embrace the outdoor setting overlooking the lake.

Each season offers a different atmosphere — from blooming spring gardens and vibrant summer sunsets to the quieter, cinematic beauty of early autumn on Lake Como.

How Much Does a Wedding at Villa Monastero Cost?

We believe wedding planning should feel clear, elegant, and inspiring from the very beginning — which is why we always speak openly about pricing.

Our all-inclusive wedding experience at Villa Monastero starts from €12,500 for the couple and up to 25 guests.

The experience includes everything needed to create a seamless and beautifully coordinated wedding day on Lake Como:

— Exclusive venue rental at Villa Monastero
— Symbolic wedding ceremony overlooking the lake
— Professional wedding photographer (5 hours)
— Bridal hair and makeup styling
— Seasonal bridal bouquet and groom’s boutonniere
— Private Venetian boat experience on Lake Como (1 hour)
— Aperitivo after the ceremony
— Full wedding planning and day-of coordination
— Styling concept and aesthetic guidance
— Hotel and restaurant booking assistance
— All agency and coordination fees included

It is important to note that Villa Monastero is a historic public museum and botanical garden, which means the estate itself does not close entirely for weddings during opening hours. Instead, the ceremony spaces and selected areas of the gardens are elegantly reserved and protected to ensure privacy and an intimate atmosphere for the celebration.

Additional experiences — including videography, live music, floral installations, vintage car transfers, and private wedding dinners — can be arranged depending on the atmosphere and scale you envision for your celebration.

For many couples planning a destination wedding from abroad, the greatest luxury is simplicity.

One team. One point of contact. One carefully managed experience — without the stress of coordinating multiple vendors from another country.

If you would like a personalised proposal based on your preferred date and guest count, we would be happy to arrange a video call with our planner Ekaterina, who lives on Lake Como and personally oversees our weddings here.

This itinerary combines architecture, gardens, and some of the most scenic ferry routes on the lake — allowing you to experience Lake Como both from land and water.

For couples looking for a more exclusive experience, additional private time after the villa closes to visitors can also be arranged upon request.

We also recommend exploring the different ceremony terraces and portrait locations throughout the gardens, as each area of Villa Monastero offers its own unique atmosphere, light, and perspective over Lake Como.

Private ceremony areas at Villa Monastero offer different terraces

Please note that Villa Monastero cannot be rented on a fully exclusive basis during the day. Since it operates as a public museum, the venue cannot be completely closed to visitors; instead, the specific ceremony areas will be cordoned off for your privacy.
However, you can book the villa for exclusive use after its official closing hours.
Additionally, there is an option to host your wedding dinner on the villa’s grounds.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ceremony

Can the Ceremony Be in English?

Absolutely.

All of our ceremonies at Villa Monastero are conducted entirely in English for international couples — or in multiple languages, if you would like to include different cultures and family backgrounds within the ceremony itself.

But more importantly, the ceremony never feels generic.

We write each script individually, based on your story, your dynamic as a couple, and the atmosphere you want to create during the vows. Whether you prefer something emotional and deeply personal, elegant and understated, or light and intimate — the ceremony should sound like you.

Many couples also choose to include personal vows, readings from friends or family members, or symbolic traditions that feel meaningful to them. We carefully weave these elements into the ceremony so that the experience feels natural, emotional, and truly yours.

No feeling disconnected from the moment.

Just the two of you, your words, and Lake Como in the background.

What to Wear for a Wedding at Villa Monastero

Villa Monastero is one of the most elegant wedding venues on Lake Como — but it is still a lakeside garden, and understanding the setting helps you feel comfortable throughout the day.

The ceremony areas combine historic stone terraces with garden pathways, so we usually recommend avoiding very thin stiletto heels. A second pair of comfortable shoes is always a good idea for moving through the gardens and boarding the boat afterward.

That said, we always come prepared. Heel protectors for the bride and guests are part of our wedding kit, because the smallest details matter when you want to feel relaxed and fully present.

For spring weddings, especially in May and early June, evenings on the lake can become cooler quite quickly after sunset. A light bridal cover-up or elegant shawl is worth bringing for the boat ride and evening dinner.

And speaking of the boat — this is where softer fabrics become especially beautiful.

Flowing silhouettes, silk textures, movement in the wind, relaxed hairstyles touched slightly by the lake breeze… Villa Monastero naturally lends itself to a look that feels refined, effortless, and timeless rather than overly structured or formal.

For grooms and guests, the atmosphere is elegant but relaxed. Think Italian sophistication rather than black-tie rigidity.

What Happens if It Rains? What Happens if It Rains?

This is one of the most important questions couples can ask when planning an outdoor wedding on Lake Como.

And honestly — rain is always possible.

The good news is that Villa Monastero is one of the safer outdoor venues on the lake when it comes to weather conditions. The ceremony terrace is partially covered and naturally protected, which already makes the experience far more comfortable than many fully exposed lakefront venues.

More importantly, every wedding we plan includes a carefully prepared weather contingency plan long before the wedding day arrives.

We monitor forecasts closely, coordinate directly with the villa team, and adjust timelines smoothly if needed — without turning the day into a stressful logistical operation.

And there is something else worth saying.

Rain on Lake Como can be extraordinarily beautiful.

The mountains disappear into soft mist, the lake becomes darker and more cinematic, the gardens deepen in colour, and the photographs often feel even more emotional and atmospheric than under clear skies.

Italy has a way of making even imperfect weather feel romantic.

Getting to Villa Monastero

One of the reasons Varenna feels so special is precisely because it remains small, quiet, and beautifully preserved.

But that also means logistics require thoughtful planning — especially when guests are arriving from different countries or cities.

Most of our couples arrive on Lake Como at least one or two days before the wedding. This allows the experience to unfold slowly and removes any sense of rushing on the wedding morning itself.

For guests travelling from Milan, the easiest option is the direct train from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino station, which takes approximately one hour and runs regularly throughout the day. From the station, Villa Monastero is just a short walk away.

Guests arriving from Como usually travel by ferry — slower, but incredibly scenic, and often one of the most memorable parts of the journey (it takes approximately two hours).

Parking in Varenna is limited, particularly during the summer season. For this reason, we often recommend organising private transfers or group transportation for guests rather than relying on individual cars. In case some guests do drive, there is a covered paid parking garage directly opposite the villa — the most convenient option and a short walk to the entrance.

Of course, all of this is something we help coordinate throughout the planning process.

Because destination weddings should feel effortless — even behind the scenes.

Where to Stay Near Villa Monastero

Choosing the right accommodation is an important part of the overall wedding experience on Lake Como.

For most couples, we recommend staying either in Varenna itself or in the nearby town of Bellano, both of which allow the wedding day to begin calmly, without transfers or unnecessary movement.

In Varenna, Hotel Royal Victoria remains one of the most iconic properties on the lakefront and one of the hotels our couples choose most often for their wedding stay. The atmosphere is classic, elegant, and perfectly positioned for bridal preparation overlooking the water.

Just next door to Villa Monastero is Hotel Villa Cipressi — a historic villa surrounded by botanical gardens, ideal for couples looking for intimacy and timeless Italian charm.

For something quieter and more understated, Hotel du Lac offers a smaller and more personal atmosphere directly by the lake.

Bellano, located just a few minutes away, is perfect for couples who prefer a slightly more private setting while remaining close to Varenna. We often recommend Hotel Meridiana and Villa Marina for their relaxed atmosphere and beautiful lake views.

As part of our planning service, we personally assist all couples with accommodation recommendations and bookings to ensure the entire wedding experience feels cohesive from beginning to end.

Why Work With a Local Wedding Planner on Lake Como

Villa Monastero is not a traditional hotel venue.

It is a historic public estate with its own operational rules, timing restrictions, permissions, and coordination processes — and understanding how the villa truly works behind the scenes makes an enormous difference to the wedding experience itself.

We have been planning weddings at Villa Monastero since 2016.

We know how the light moves through the gardens at different hours of the day. We know which ceremony locations feel most intimate depending on guest count. We know the local photographers, florists, musicians, and boat captains who genuinely understand the atmosphere of this place.

And perhaps most importantly — we know how to make the logistics invisible.

For couples planning from abroad, this changes everything.

Instead of spending months navigating Italian bureaucracy, multiple vendors, and language barriers, you can focus on the experience itself — while we quietly coordinate every moving part behind the scenes.

Every WOWITALY wedding is managed by three planners:

  • one leading the planning process
  • one coordinating the wedding day on-site
  • and one managing logistics in the background

This structure allows the day to feel calm and beautifully organised without ever feeling controlled or overproduced.

Exactly as a wedding in Italy should feel.

Frequently Asked Questions About wedding

Do we need to come to Italy before the wedding?

No — most of our couples plan everything remotely and arrive on Lake Como only a few days before the wedding. We coordinate the venue, vendors, logistics, and timeline entirely online. A video call is enough to begin planning.

How far in advance should we book Villa Monastero?

For the most requested months — May, June, and September — we recommend booking approximately 6–8 months in advance. Availability at Villa Monastero is limited each season, and the most beautiful dates are often reserved early.

Is a symbolic ceremony legally valid?

A symbolic ceremony is not legally binding in Italy. Most international couples complete the legal registration in their home country either before or after the wedding in Italy. We are happy to explain how this usually works for couples from the US, UK, Australia, and other countries.

Can we write our own vows?

Absolutely. Personal vows often become the most emotional part of the entire ceremony. And if you need help expressing your thoughts, we can guide you through the process gently and naturally.

How many guests can attend?

Villa Monastero is ideal for intimate weddings and accommodates up to 25 guests for the ceremony itself. Dinner and boat arrangements can vary depending on the restaurant or villa you choose afterward.

Can we have dinner at Villa Monastero?

Villa Monastero does not have its own restaurant, which is why we usually continue the celebration either at a lakefront restaurant nearby or at a private villa with a panoramic terrace. Both options create a beautiful continuation of the evening.

What is included in your planning fee?

Our all-inclusive package includes venue rental, ceremony planning, photography, styling, boat experience, aperitivo for the newlyweds, coordination, and full wedding planning support from the first consultation until the end of the wedding day. We always provide transparent pricing with no hidden fees.

Can we visit Villa Monastero before booking?

Yes. The villa is open to visitors throughout the season as a museum and botanical garden, so you are welcome to explore it independently. We can also arrange a private venue visit together if you would like to experience the space with one of our planners.

Do you work with videographers?

Yes — videography can be added to any wedding package. We collaborate with a carefully selected team of videographers who know Villa Monastero and Lake Como exceptionally well.

What languages does your team speak?

Our team speaks English, Russian, and Italian fluently. All planning communication, ceremony scripts, and wedding documentation are provided in English.

The bridge where it started. The lake where they said yes: the vows on Lake Como, Anastasia & Armando

A Bridge, a Ring, and a View That Takes Your Breath Away

Photography: Viktoria Vasilenko

Hair & Makeup: Olga Goncharova

Venue: Villa Monastero

Event Planner: @wowitaly_events

Some love stories begin with a grand gesture. This one began with a barbecue.

Armando and Anastasia met at a friend’s house — nothing planned, nothing staged. Just an evening, a conversation, and that quiet shift that happens when you meet someone who matters. Neither of them could have predicted what that night would lead to. But something in that first exchange made Armando reach out again.

He invited her to dinner. And later, during a car ride through the city, he took her hand for the first time. It happened on a bridge — a small, ordinary moment that neither of them forgot.

The Kind of Love That Lives in the Details

Theirs is not a love story built on grand declarations. It lives in the mornings — Armando squeezing fresh orange juice before the day begins. In the evenings by the sea. In getting ready together before dinner, in mountain trips and quiet walks, in the small rituals that make any place feel like home.

When Anastasia moved to Spain, life rearranged itself around that fact. Armando’s world expanded. Their paths, once separate, became one. Family became the centre. A shared future stopped being a dream and became a plan.

And then, life brought them back to that bridge.

The same place where he first took her hand. This time, Armando was holding a ring. He asked the question that would change everything — and in that moment, both of them felt something rare: that this moment was entirely, unrepeatable theirs.

The Morning Before Everything Changed

Anastasia and Armando woke up at Hotel Royal Victoria in Varenna — one of the most quietly beautiful hotels on the lake, with the water almost close enough to touch from the windows.

Anastasia’s morning was unhurried and full of intention. Hair, makeup, flowers, the kind of stillness that settles over a bride when she finally allows herself to feel the weight of the day. The team worked around her while the lake outside stayed perfectly still.

Their first look happened at the hotel.

The moment Armando saw her, the rest of Varenna seemed to pause.

Villa Monastero

The ceremony took place in the gardens of Villa Monastero — a historic estate that began its life as a Cistercian monastery in the 12th century and has spent the centuries since becoming one of the most breathtaking places in Italy.

There is something about this garden that is hard to describe without standing in it. The lake sits just beyond the ceremony space, and the mountains on the far shore look like they were placed there deliberately, as a backdrop. The air is different here — slower, quieter, older.

Anastasia walked toward Armando under that sky, in that light, in that silence.

The ceremony was intimate and personal. Their story — the BBQ evening, the bridge, the orange juice, the ring — was woven through every word spoken.

After the Ceremony

Once the vows were exchanged, the afternoon opened up the way only Lake Como afternoons can.

A private Venetian limo boat was waiting at the dock. Armando and Anastasia stepped aboard, and for the next hour, the lake was entirely theirs — moving slowly between Varenna and Bellagio, with prosecco, the mountains, and nowhere else to be.

The evening ended with dinner overlooking the water.

The kind of dinner where the lake turns gold and then dark while you’re still at the table.

What We Carried Away From This Day

Every wedding we plan teaches us something.

Anastasia and Armando reminded us that the most powerful love stories are often the quietest ones.

A hand taken on a bridge. A ring at the same spot, years later. A morning at a lake hotel. A garden that has been holding ceremonies for centuries.

We had the privilege of planning every detail of this day — from the first venue call to the last dinner reservation. And watching it come together for two people who so clearly belong in each other’s lives was, as always, the reason we do this work.

How Much Does a Lake Como Villa Elopement Cost?

One of the most common questions couples ask is: how much does it actually cost to elope on Lake Como?

The answer depends entirely on how you choose to design your experience. A wedding here is not a fixed package — it is a flexible structure, where each element shapes the final budget.

It’s less about a number — and more about the kind of experience you want to create.

Main Cost Factors

  • Villa rental
from public villas with limited access to full private buyouts
  • Planning & coordination
essential for a seamless destination experience
  • Photography & videography
one of the most important investments on Lake Como
  • Decor & floral design
from minimal styling to a fully developed concept
  • Hair & makeup, transportation, music
final details that complete the overall experience

Each element can be adjusted depending on your priorities, allowing you to create a wedding that feels both beautiful and intentional.

How to Choose the Right Villa for Your Lake Como Elopement

With so many beautiful villas on Lake Como, the choice can feel overwhelming.

But the right villa is not the most famous one — it’s the one that fits your vision, your pace, and the way you want to experience the day.

It’s about how it feels — not just how it looks.

Guest Count

Even for an elopement, this matters. Some villas are perfect for just two people, while others are designed for small gatherings of 10–20 guests. The right match creates a natural, balanced atmosphere.

Level of Privacy

Public villas may have visitors nearby, while private villas offer complete seclusion. If your priority is an uninterrupted and personal experience, privacy becomes essential.

Style & Atmosphere

Each villa has its own personality — historic and grand, modern and minimal, romantic and garden-focused, or dramatic with panoramic views. Choose what resonates with how you want your day to feel.

Logistics & Accessibility

Consider distance, access by car or boat, and overall comfort throughout the day. The smoother the logistics, the more relaxed your experience will be.

Experience vs Budget

Lake Como offers a wide range of options. A well-chosen hidden gem can feel just as beautiful as a famous villa — often more personal and relaxed.

The goal is not to spend more.
It’s to spend intentionally.

When Is the Best Time for a Lake Como Villa Elopement?

Timing plays a quiet but important role in how your elopement on Lake Como will feel.

Each season offers its own atmosphere — the choice is about the mood you want to create.

Spring (April – June)

  • ✦ fresh greenery and blooming gardens
  • ✦ soft, diffused light for photography
  • ✦ fewer crowds compared to peak summer

Summer (July – August)

  • ✦ long days and golden sunsets
  • ✦ vibrant atmosphere around the lake
  • ✦ ideal for warmth, energy, and movement

Early Autumn (September – October)

  • ✦ one of the most beautiful seasons on Lake Como
  • ✦ warm light and softer tones
  • ✦ a calmer, more private atmosphere

For elopements, weekdays are often the best choice — offering more availability, greater privacy, and a more relaxed, uninterrupted experience.

Why Work with a Local Lake Como Wedding Planner

Planning an elopement in another country is not just about choosing a villa.

It’s about understanding how everything works — from availability and logistics to timing and local nuances.

The right local team doesn’t just organize your day — they shape your entire experience.

Access to the Right Villas

Not all locations are easy to find or book without local connections. Some of the most beautiful villas are not widely advertised — and knowing them changes everything.

Clear Communication

Local planners work directly with villa teams and vendors, ensuring accurate availability, transparent pricing, and no misunderstandings along the way.

A Seamless Experience

From the first idea to the wedding day, everything is coordinated with precision — so you don’t have to manage suppliers, timelines, or unexpected issues.

Local Expertise That Protects Your Vision

Lake Como is stunning — but it also has its own rhythm, rules, and way of working. Having a team that knows it from the inside ensures everything feels smooth, natural, and exactly as you imagined.
