The villa was also a beloved retreat of film director Luchino Visconti, founder of Italian neorealism and creator of cinematic classics such as Rocco and His Brothers, Ossessione, and Death in Venice.

Villa Erba stands on land that once belonged to a women’s monastery built at the end of the 11th century. It is believed that the monastery gave its name to the nearby town of Cernobbio — from the word cenobio, meaning “monastery.” The monastery building was later transformed and expanded with a tower offering a picturesque panorama of the surrounding landscapes.

In the late 19th century, ownership passed to Luigi Erba, brother and heir of Carlo Erba, one of the most prominent pharmaceutical manufacturers of his time. Significant funds were invested in reshaping the villa, which was intended to reflect the status and prestige of the Erba family. The estate was later inherited by Carla Erba, wife of Duke Giuseppe Visconti di Modrone. Their son, Luchino Visconti — who would go on to become a legendary film director — spent time here, and one of the villa’s rooms is now named in his honor, preserving memorabilia connected to him.

Today, Villa Erba includes an elegant historic residence with breathtaking interiors, a magnificent park and botanical garden featuring plants from around the world, as well as a congress center that hosts art and film festivals, concerts, and even the Italian Comic Con. The villa is also a sought-after venue for private events, fashion shows, and advertising campaigns — with brands such as Bulgari and Guess among those who have chosen it.

Villa Erba is an ideal setting for glamorous, luxurious weddings in true Lake Como style. Symbolic ceremonies can be arranged outdoors — either on the lawn with breathtaking lake views or in front of the villa’s magnificent façade.

Depending on the number of guests, the aperitif or dinner can be hosted outdoors, in a marquee, or inside one of the villa’s elegant halls. For dancing, there is a stunning grand ballroom, where celebrations can continue until 4 a.m.

The villa’s advantages include its private dock — perfect for arriving by boat or taking a romantic sunset photoshoot — as well as a helipad. While there are no accommodation options on-site, the nearby towns of Cernobbio and Como offer a wide selection of beautiful and comfortable hotels.

Villa Erba is available for weddings from April to November.
The rental fee from 17:00 to 01:00 ranges from €24,400 to €29,300, depending on the guest count. Music and dancing are permitted until 4 a.m. (subject to venue approval and an additional fee).
