Wedding Photo Session at Villa Melzi (Lake Como)

Villa Melzi (Italian: Villa Melzi) is located in the town of Bellagio in the southern part of Lake Como, between two of its branches. Despite being located in one of the most popular towns on Lake Como, the villa remains a hidden gem, known only to a few tourists.

For many years, Villa Melzi has hosted such distinguished guests as the general Napoleon Bonaparte, composer Franz Liszt, and writer Stendhal, who was particularly impressed by the local nature. Today, the villa and its gardens allow us to immerse ourselves in history and enjoy architectural and natural perfection. The perfect location for wedding photo shoots on Lake Como, embodying elegance and classicism that always remain timeless.

The history of Villa Melzi spans more than two centuries. The villa was built between 1808 and 1810 for Francesco Melzi d’Eril, Duke of Lodi and Vice President of the Italian Republic under Napoleon. The Duke commissioned Lombard architect, decorator, and painter Giocondo Albertolli, a prominent figure in the Neoclassical school, to design the villa.

Albertolli’s genius created a building in light pastel colors, harmoniously blending with the surrounding landscape, without overpowering it. No cluttered details, no wild colors or excessive decoration. Villa Melzi is the embodiment of restraint and elegance typical of Neoclassicism.

The private collection of the Melzi family includes outstanding sculptures, paintings, and antiques that demonstrate their passion for art. The most famous artists and decorators of the time contributed to the decor and furnishings, including the aforementioned Giocondo Albertolli, who worked on much of the interior decoration, as well as Andrea Appiani, Antonio Canova, Giambattista Comolli, and others.

A distinctive feature of Villa Melzi is the wonderful garden, which is a national historic monument. Landscape architect Luigi Canonica and botanist Luigi Villoresi created the garden in the English style, combining exotic and local flora in a harmonious union.

Here, you can see a Japanese pond, a hidden grotto, a whole avenue of plane trees starting from the boat dock, statues and busts in Roman and ancient Egyptian styles. Exotic and rare plants alternate with centuries-old trees and hedges. The gardens are particularly beautiful in April and May when you can enjoy the blooming of azaleas and rhododendrons.

In the greenhouse adjoining the villa, there is a small museum displaying items from the Napoleonic era.

The elegant, restrained design of the villa, stunning views of the mountains and lake, the lush garden, hidden gems like the charming gazebo with Roman-style busts, all make for an excellent backdrop for your wedding photo shoot. Villa Melzi is a real find for those who appreciate simplicity, without extravagance and gaudiness, eternal classicism, and elegance.
